Switching to Samsung? Keep your Apple Watch

Short answer

Do it in this order: keep the watch set up from your iPhone, install KeepMyWatch on the watch and on your Galaxy phone, scan the code the watch shows, and allow alerts once. After that the iPhone can stay switched off.

Before you put the iPhone away

  1. Make sure the watch is set up and working with the iPhone, on the latest watchOS you want to keep.
  2. On the watch, join the Wi-Fi networks you use (home, work), so it knows them later without the iPhone.
  3. Don’t unpair or reset the watch. A reset watch needs an iPhone again to be set up.

Install and pair

  1. Install KeepMyWatch on your Galaxy phone from Google Play.
  2. Install KeepMyWatch on the watch from the App Store on the watch.
  3. On the watch, open KeepMyWatch and tap Pair phone. It shows a square code.
  4. On the phone, open KeepMyWatch and point the camera at the code. The two now share a key no one else has.
  5. Android asks once to let KeepMyWatch read notifications. Allow it.

After the switch

  • Alerts from every app arrive on the watch, each once. Switch off any app in Apps.
  • Phone and WhatsApp calls show on the watch, and Decline sends them away.
  • The old iPhone can stay switched off; this was tried with the iPhone fully off.
  • Set the app’s battery use to Unrestricted so alerts aren’t held back (see the battery guide).
