Keep a Wi-Fi Apple Watch online when you leave home
Your watch gets alerts over the internet. Away from Wi-Fi, a Wi-Fi-only watch can join your phone’s hotspot. KeepMyWatch posts a short notification when the phone leaves Wi-Fi, and a Samsung routine turns the hotspot on when it sees it.
Why the watch needs it
With an iPhone, a watch talks to the phone over Bluetooth. With Android it can’t, so alerts travel over the internet. A cellular watch has its own connection. A Wi-Fi watch has only the networks it knows, and on the street that may be none.
1. Let the watch join your hotspot once
- On the phone, turn on Mobile Hotspot and note its name and password.
- On the watch, open Settings, then Wi-Fi, pick that name and enter the password.
- The watch remembers it from then on.
2. Make the two routines
In KeepMyWatch, open Auto hotspot and switch on “Turn on the hotspot when I leave Wi-Fi”. Then, in the phone’s Settings:
- Open Modes and Routines, then Routines, and tap +.
- If: Notification received, app KeepMyWatch, keyword KMW-HS1. Then: Mobile Hotspot, On. Save it as “Watch hotspot on”.
- Make a second routine. If: Notification received, app KeepMyWatch, keyword KMW-HS0. Then: Mobile Hotspot, Off. Save it as “Watch hotspot off”.
Menu names can differ a little between Samsung software versions. The app shows the same steps and lets you copy each keyword.
3. Test it
In Auto hotspot, tap Test on: within a few seconds the hotspot turns on and the watch joins it. Then tap Test off. If nothing happens, check that each routine’s keyword is exactly the code above.
On phones without Modes and Routines, KeepMyWatch shows a notification when the phone leaves Wi-Fi; tap it and switch the hotspot on yourself.
